Many things had taken April by surprise recently. The world had changed a lot. She had gone from living a relatively normal—though privileged—life in a world full of mortals, to this new life were nothing was what it seemed.

Vampires existed, demons existed, giant robots with machine guns existed, apparently, she was a ‘Elemental Fae’, whatever that was. She thought it was a miracle she had managed to keep herself together in light of everything that had happened lately. Most other people would have gone bonkers surely.

Not only do vampires exist. I’m in a foul mood with one.

She knew she was probably being unfair towards Bane, but the friend comment had really upset her for some reason, though she couldn’t even explain why. A few ideas had crossed her mind, but the one that had any real credence made her feel like a terrible human being.

I still haven’t told him about the company. I was the heir to Lock Industries! My father’s company is the same one that made Bane a slave!

She didn’t exactly understand what Bane was to her, or how their relationship should be defined, but even if it was friends then she was being a super shitty friend by not telling him who she really was. He had kept her safe. He had been there for her ever since they’d met, he’d… done things with her she never thought she would experience. All she had done was lie to him.

It all swirled around inside her as a confusing cocktail of prickling emotions. There was warmth from the happiness she felt whenever she looked at him, guilt for how she was treating him, and shame for the secret that was weighing down on her, feeling like an anchor dragging down toward the depths.

They touched down a few minutes after setting off from the bar. Bane set her down gingerly. Despite all the things she had recently seen Castle Howell still took her breath away.

“This is where you used to live?!” she gasped as they approached the castle’s tall front doors. April had only been able to glimpse a brief look so far, but the sprawling labyrinth of stone towers hidden in the forest was really like a castle from a fairytale. She had seen a lot of nice houses in her time, heck, her own family manor was a historical building, but this castle was something else altogether.

“Well, the coven in general live here.” They entered and walked down a hallway, which took them into a broad interior courtyard. From there April could get a better idea of the castle’s layout. Bane pointed at different towers on the near horizon as he spoke. “Everyone has their own section of the castle. It’s the only place I’ve ever lived were I felt I had privacy and a community at the same time. Each tower is a separate house for the more senior vampires.”

Walking across the courtyard April counted six large towers, but she suspected more stretched on in the darkness. “Which one was yours?”

Bane smiled.
